In the year 2004, W3C had developed HTML, when the developers of the HTML working group became frustrated with the direction of their HTML project. This working group felt that W3C is not paying enough attention to the real-world developmental needs of coding and language. They felt that the focus towards XML and XHTML was a bit too much. So they went ahead to form a new group called the WHATWG, abbreviated for Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group.

This group started to create new specifications of HTML – HTML 5. It is a new version of the previous HTML 4.01 and HTML 1.0 version, focusing on the requirements of web application developers. The developers addressed the issues found in the current specification. This technology has revolutionized the internet space. Websites like You Tube have taken up HTML 5 and the quality and performance has been enhanced massively. There is a long way to go still!
